Breast Enlargement

Breast Enlargement

  • Overview

Breast enlargement is designed to increase the size and improve the shape of the breasts, through the insertion of an implant beneath the breast tissue. Breast enlargement is suitable for women who have small breasts or have experienced a shrinkage in size due to pregnancy or weight loss.

The aim of breast enlargement surgery is to enhance the appearance of the cleavage, and improve your figure by balancing the hips to emphasise on the waist.

A breast implant is a medical prosthesis that is placed inside of the breast to reconstruct, augment or create the physical form of the breast. The outside layer of the breast implant is made of firm silicone, while the inside of the implant is either filled with salt water – saline solution – or silicone gel. These implants may last for at least ten years.

Although saline and silicone breast implants both consist of a silicone shell, they differ in material and consistency. Saline implants are inserted into the breast empty and then filled with sterile salt water. It is available to women 18 years and older for breast augmentation and to women of any age for breast reconstruction. Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone and inserted into the breast, giving it a natural look and feel. It is available to women 22 years and older for breast augmentation and to women of any age for breast reconstruction.

Saline and silicone breast implants pose similar risks which include:

    • Scar tissue that distorts the shape of the breast implant
    • Breast pain
    • Infection
    • Changes in nipple and breast sensation, usually temporary
    • Implant leakage or rupture

If an implant ruptures or leaks, the approach will vary, depending on whether the saline or silicone implant is used. If a saline implant ruptures, the implant will deflate, causing the affected breast to change size and shape. The leaking saline solution will then be naturally absorbed by the body, posing no health risk. The silicone shell will have to be surgically removed, and another saline implant can be placed at the same time. If a silicone implant ruptures, it will not be noticeable nor will it cause any health problems, but it could cause moderate breast pain and the eventual reshaping of the breast.

  • Preparations

It is important to avoid consuming any blood thinning tablets for two weeks before and after the surgery, as the tablets can have adverse effect on bruising. If you are a smoker, it is imperative that you stop smoking for four weeks before surgery and two weeks after, to avoid restricting the circulation of the skin. This applies to all smoking products, including inhalers and smoking prevention products.

Also, ensure that you arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery, as you will be unable to drive yourself.

In preparation for your surgery, bring a soft bra (one without an underwire) that is in your new size.
